Can a spellcaster use spell slots above their normal limit ... I always thought that the extra spell slots were used for spells which had a metamagic feat applied to them. Or at least that is their primary use when you cannot cast spells of that level. Metamagic feats make spells use a higher spell slot, but don't actually change the level of the spell.
